AFA P2P

Anna's Wish is aligned to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America's (AFA) core values, to provide support, services and education to individuals, families and caregivers affected by Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias nationwide, and fund research for better treatment and a cure.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia, and currently it affects more than 5 million adults in the United States alone. Researchers predict that the disease will affect some 13.8 million Americans by 2050. A progressive disease, Alzheimer’s worsens over time, resulting in severe memory loss, loss of thinking skills, and inability to do daily activities.

The causes of Alzheimer’s disease are not fully understood, but they’re thought to include a combination of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors.

Anna Marie (Brady) Maddock

Anna Marie Maddock of Palm Beach Gardens died peacefully in her sleep on 21 February 2021, surrounded by her husband and family. She was 84.

Born 20 December 1936 in the rolling hills of Tullywatha (Bailieboro), County Cavan, Ireland, Anna was the daughter of John J. Brady, a farmer, and Ellen B. (Smith) Brady. Sadly, her mother Ellen died while Anna and her three brothers (Terrence, James, and Tom) were only young children.

At 13 years old, Anna left the family farm for boarding school, and at 17 she immigrated to America. Her first job was arranging flowers for Mary and Stephen Sanford at their ‘Los Incas’ home in Palm Beach. As Florida’s winter season came to a close, Anna moved in with an Aunt and Uncle on Manhattan’s Upper Eastside. In NY, she enrolled in American-English vocal training and landed a job at AT&T as a Telephone Operator, commuting on her trusty Vespa. Occasionally, Anna and her girlfriends would visit Yorkville’s Jaeger House to dance to Irish music. It was there she would meet John C. Maddock, an electronic technician and entrepreneur who had honorably served in the US Navy.

In 1954 when Anna had first arrived in NY, she had dreams of being a dancer in the Radio City Rockettes, but it was not to be at her diminutive height. As a young child, she wanted to sing like her cousin Terrence in the church choir, but alas she was off-key. What she did have was a heart of gold, a wonderful smile, bright blue eyes, a sense of humor and tremendous perseverance to plow ahead, perhaps as her father had taught her on the farm back in the old country.

On 8 August 1959, at 22 years old, she married John (25), just before he left for the Arctic Circle DEW-line to work on classified US Defense Department radar systems. Anna immediately jumped into action, singlehandedly purchased a modest house in Deer Park, Long Island and made it into a home. Simultaneously, she set about raising a family of eight children. By 1965 Anna had six children at or under the age of five. A Herculean task for any woman, let alone a half-pint lady that stood maybe five feet tall on her toes.

Over the years, John built one company after another and moved up and down the East Coast from NY to Rockville (MD), to Ridgefield (CT), to Coral Springs (FL) and Canton (OH). Anna had the job of settling the children and ensuring their education and social schedules. Always with a smile and carefree ease, she danced effortlessly into the hearts and minds of the PTAs and neighborhood socials, just as she had done in the dance halls of Manhattan upon her arrival in 1950’s America.

America’s Bicentennial marked the country’s Inaugural Citizenship Day, 13 September 1976, and in the leafy suburbs of Washington DC, Anna raised her right hand and became a US citizen.

Predeceased by her daughter Eileen Strong, Anna is survived by her husband John; seven children: Patricia and husband Vince Durante, Clinton Maddock and wife Sue, George Maddock and wife Naoko, Maureen Maddock-Ritter, Kathleen Neely and husband Larry, Grace Maddock and Gerald Maddock and wife Mauna; 14 grandchildren: Ryan Strong, Lauren Strong, Stephen Strong, Ben Maddock, Sam Maddock, Nikki Ritter, Bryan Ritter, Christopher Durante, Kaitlin Durante, Kamden Maddock, Nick Beckel, Lauren Beckel, Mady Beckel, Jennifer Neely, her partner John Hardardt and son Jackson who is Anna’s first great-grandchild.

Due to the coronavirus there will be no visiting. A private mass will be held at 9:30 am on Friday, 26 February 2021 at St. Clare Catholic Church (821 Prosperity Farms Road, North Palm Beach, FL 33408 / 561-622-7477 / https://stclarechurch.net/contact-us/)
