Mary Ellen Slone, 78, passed away Saturday, November 6, 2021. She was the wife of Robert A. Slone, daughter of James and Wilhemina McEwan, and was born in Clearfield, PA November 30, 1942.

A pioneer for women in business, Mary Ellen was an honors graduate of the University of Kentucky. She began her career as Creative Director of Abbott Advertising, the in-house advertising agency for Jerrico, Inc. She founded her own firm, MER Advertising, in 1974. MER would eventually become Meridian Communications, one of the largest ad agencies in the state of Kentucky, with a roster of local, regional and national clients. The agency won numerous regional and national awards. The campaign of which she was most proud though was Meridian’s award winning campaign for the Kentucky Child Abuse Council, “Have you Hugged Your Kid Today?”. 

In addition to her work, Mary Ellen was also very involved in the community including serving as Chair of the Greater Lexington Chamber of Commerce; President and Building Chair of the Lexington Humane Society; Trustee of the Kentucky Independent College Foundation; Vice-President, Marketing for the Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra; Board Member of the United Way of the Bluegrass and Kentucky Child Abuse Council, Advisor to the University of Kentucky School of Journalism and Telecommunications and Lexington Community College; Board Member of Central Bank; Board Member of Republic Bank and Trust Company; Mary Ellen Was also appointed as a Director of the Federal Reserve Bank for the Cincinnati and Cleveland regions. For her many contributions, she received a number of recognitions including being named 1982 Lexington Woman of the Year; 1990 recipient of Lexington’s Aequum award for outstanding woman business person, and she was elected to the Kentucky Advertising Hall of Fame. She had been a lay reader in the Episcopal Church and was a member of Good Shepherd Episcopal Church. In her free time, Mary Ellen and Bob loved to travel, dote on their grandchildren and pets, and listen to music.

Mary Ellen is survived by her devoted husband, Bob; two step-daughters, Mary Diane Slone and Laura Slone Newsome (Brad) and her grandchildren who she loved dearly, Virginia Newsome-Travers (Zack), Drew Newsome, Mary Chun Slone, Kendal Burger, Marshall Burger, and her precious dog, Sadie. 

Milward Funeral Directors are entrusted with Mary Ellen’s service arrangements. Visitation will be Friday, November 12th from 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church located at 533 E. Main Street, Lexington with service to follow at 1:00 pm.
